Rihkxyrk Assault Fighter (Fighters)

When TransGalMeg Industries Incorporated were given the task of designing a heavy assault fighter, they were given a limited budget to work with. The design team knew they would have to compromise one of the three key combat parameters of maneuverability, protection and firepower. After much debate, the team decided that increasing the proposed fighter’s armour and shielding and including concussion missiles as part of the armament would mean provide the fighter with enough survivability and lethality to overcome any more nimble opponent. Thus the Rihkxyrk Assault Fighter was born.

The fighter’s fuselage is comprised of a cylindrical main body with the cockpit situated to the aft of the midpoint, just in front of the ship’s ion engines, which are located on the ventral surface of the main body beneath a set of stubby wings. An additional set of large canard wings are situated along the forward fuselage and nose, mounted at an angle of approximately forty five degrees. The canards serve as the mounting point for the craft’s two laser cannons while a pair of concussion missile launchers are mounted beneath the aft wings, providing the Rihkxyrk with formidable firepower against other fighters.

The designers opted against providing the ship with a hyperdrive unit, and the spare power from the ship’s engines powers a formidable deflector array, which enables the ship to soak up a surprising amount of cannon fire before failing. Even should the shields fail, the ship’s more vulnerable areas, including the cockpit, are protected with durasteel armour almost two centimetres thick, quite sufficient to protect the pilot from prolonged exposure to laser cannon fire. This is necessary, as the fighter lacks sufficient maneuverability to evade accurate fire and must rely on its thick hide to survive, as its designers intended. While not a great success commercially, the Rihkxyrk can still be found in limited numbers in the fleets of pirates and bandits throughout the galaxy, while captured examples have been pressed into service by some more reputable organisations.
